Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has declared a sit-in at the Sindh IG office on April 5 to protest against the growing menace of reckless heavy vehicles in Karachi.
The announcement came during a demonstration at Malir Halt, where JI Karachi Emir Munim Zafar condemned the Sindh government’s inaction following a tragic incident in which a tanker collided with a motorcycle, claiming an entire family’s lives.
Addressing the protesters, Zafar criticized the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government, holding it responsible for the increasing number of fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles. He accused the administration of allowing Karachi’s roads to become death traps due to unregulated dumpers and tankers.
“The Sindh Chief Minister dismisses this as a non-political issue, yet Karachi’s residents are suffering due to government negligence,” Zafar stated, demanding accountability from the Chief Minister, Transport Minister, IG, and DIG for their failure to enforce traffic regulations.
He further alleged that illegal tankers and dumpers operate freely in broad daylight while the government remains indifferent.
Calling for urgent reforms, he insisted that Karachi locals should be recruited into the police force, arguing that the current officers lack awareness of the city’s traffic challenges.
Exposing alleged corruption within the police department, Zafar claimed that bribery runs unchecked from SHOs to DIGs, with no oversight. He also revealed that in just 85 days, 216 lives have been lost in Karachi due to heavy vehicle accidents.
JI vowed to continue its struggle for Karachi’s residents, urging authorities to take immediate action to prevent further tragedies.
