Today is the 97th birth anniversary of Abdul Sattar Edhi, the greatest philanthropist and servant of humanity.
Abdul Sattar Edhi served humanity selflessly without discrimination, dedicated his entire life to welfare work. Edhi, who served humanity without discrimination for decades, is still alive in the heart of every Pakistani.
Edhi was born on February 28, 1928 in the city of Bantwa in the Indian state of Gujarat. He settled in Karachi after the formation of Pakistan, started serving the suffering humanity from a small room in 1951.
Edhi founded the Edhi Foundation, and started serving abandoned children, helpless women and the elderly people., Edhi’s ambulance service set examples of humanitarian service from major tragedies to minor accidents that will always be remembered.
In addition to hospitals and ambulances, the Edhi Foundation opened clinics, maternity centers, mental hospitals, homes for the disabled, blood banks, orphanages, adoption centers for abandoned children, shelters and schools.
According to the 1997 Guinness Book of World Records, the Edhi Foundation’s ambulance service is the largest welfare ambulance service in the world. Edhi’s wife stood by him in every mission. Abdul Sattar Edhi’s son Faisal Edhi says that his father did not limit his passion for serving society to himself but passed it on to the next generation. He passed away on July 8, 2016, and the country honored him with a state funeral.
