Urfi Javed defends Jasleen Royal after Coldplay performance backlash

Indian singer Jasleen Royal made history as the first Indian artist to open for Coldplay at their concert in Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium, sharing the stage with the band’s iconic lead singer, Chris Martin. In a heartfelt Instagram post, the self-made artist and former Indian Idol runner-up celebrated the milestone, calling it a memorable night in her career.

However, her achievement quickly turned sour as social media users criticized her performance. Many trolls took to platforms, claiming she was “out of tune” and questioning her suitability as the opening act for such a prestigious international band.

Adding fuel to the fire, renowned Indian music composer and singer Vishal Dadlani indirectly weighed in on the controversy through an Instagram story. Though he didn’t name Jasleen specifically, Dadlani expressed his displeasure, writing, “A basic singer’s out-of-tune opening act at a global-level concert has tarnished the reputation of Indian singers and music worldwide. This is an embarrassment for the entire nation.” The post was widely seen as a critique of Jasleen’s performance, with many users agreeing with Dadlani’s sentiment.

Amid the backlash, social media influencer Urfi Javed stepped in to defend Jasleen. In an Instagram story, Javed praised the singer’s achievement, writing, “Jasleen has got such an opportunity as an independent solo performer to sing for Coldplay at least once — what a mammoth achievement!” She further commended Jasleen’s talent, saying, “We have all loved her work over the years. Let’s support and appreciate our artists.” Urfi ended her post by assuring Jasleen, “My support is always with you.”

As of now, Jasleen Royal has not publicly addressed the trolling or criticism, leaving her supporters and detractors to continue the debate on social media.
