China has developed a groundbreaking software tool for designing electronic warfare weapons. According to Chinese scientists, this new software surpasses a comparable U.S. product in both speed and memory efficiency. Remarkably, the software has been made freely available.
According to a report by WION on Sunday, the program, named Yao Guang (a poetic Chinese term describing the gentle swaying of light in the woods), was created by Professor Lei and his team at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China.
This innovative tool promises to transform the way complex electromagnetic field simulations and analyses are conducted, particularly in modern military technology. Yao Guang excels at performing detailed radiation simulations for advanced systems like phased-array radars at exceptional speeds.
For example, where a leading U.S. software, ANSYS HFSS, requires three hours to complete a radiation simulation for a similar antenna, Yao Guang achieves the same in significantly less time. This efficiency provides Chinese scientists with a substantial advantage over their American counterparts in developing next-generation electromagnetic warfare systems.
In addition to its powerful capabilities, Yao Guang stands out for its accessibility—it has been freely available for download since August. This combination of performance and cost-free access makes it appealing to users both within China and globally.
A 2022 U.S. Congressional report highlighted concerns that the American military is losing its edge in electromagnetic warfare against China. With the world’s most extensive industrial base, advanced manufacturing capabilities, and a vast pool of engineers, China is well-positioned to lead in this critical domain.
