In an effort to regulate graveyard fees in Karachi, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced a standardized rate for grave spaces in registered cemeteries. Starting Wednesday, residents will be charged Rs 14,300 for a grave space in any KMC-registered cemetery across the city.
This decision was taken following the directives of Mayor Murtaza Wahab during a meeting that included Deputy Mayor Salman Murad, Municipal Commissioner Karachi Afzal Zaidi, and Director Municipal Services Zulfiqar.
To ensure the implementation of this new rate, Sarwar Alam, Director of KMC’s Graveyard Division, visited KMC-operated cemeteries and issued instructions for compliance with the official rates and regulations. He emphasized that only KMC-registered personnel will be allowed to work within these cemeteries, and any individuals charging more than the prescribed fee will face strict penalties.
Burying loved ones is one of the most difficult experiences a family can endure. Adding the financial strain of high cemetery fees only intensifies this hardship. The steep, unregulated costs have made the process even more painful for many, leaving families struggling to cope with both emotional and financial burdens.
With this new fixed rate, KMC is providing some relief, ensuring that families no longer have to endure exploitation during their time of grief. However, the Sindh Government must also step in to provide further support and ensure these rates are not only fixed but also followed consistently across the region.
