Hamid Khan, a prominent leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, has announced a nationwide movement by lawyers against the proposed constitutional amendments, set to begin on September 19.
Meanwhile, the federal government has temporarily shelved plans for the constitutional amendment after failing to secure the necessary support.
Speaking to the media outside the Supreme Court, Khan voiced strong opposition to the proposed constitutional package, calling it “untimely and inappropriate.”
He criticized the amendments, claiming they would effectively “bury the constitution.” He also referred to lawmakers supporting the package as “Form 47 MNAs,” alluding to their vulnerability to manipulation and coercion by the government.
Khan stressed that lawyers unequivocally reject the bill and are prepared to launch a protest movement, akin to the one they led against former President Pervez Musharraf. He emphasized the Supreme Court’s role as the highest constitutional authority, rejecting any attempt to establish a parallel Federal Constitutional Court.
Khan declared that the legal fraternity would resist the establishment of such a court, even if it meant direct confrontation with the government. The movement will kick off at the Lahore High Court on September 19.
