The United States topped the medal table at the Paris Olympics, securing 40 golds to lead over China, thanks to their additional 44 silvers. China, which last led the standings during the 2008 Beijing Games, also won 40 golds but only earned 27 silvers.
The final gold of the Games was claimed by the U.S. women’s basketball team, who secured their country’s top position by narrowly defeating the host nation, France, in a thrilling finish. The U.S. also led in total medals, amassing 126 compared to China’s 91.
France earned 16 golds and finished fifth overall, achieving their highest medal count in over a century with a total of 64 medals.
