The Jamaat-e-Islami(JI) has announced postponing its 14 days-long protest sit-in after successful negotiations and an agreement with the government over demands including.
The announcement came late Thursday after the conclusion of the fifth round of talks with the government’s negotiation team at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi.
Here are the main points of the agreement between JI and the government:
- Taxation Changes: The government agreed to impose taxes on landowners and to gradually reduce taxes on the salaried class.
- Review of IPP Agreements: A task force will be formed to scrutinize agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and report to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif within a month.
- Energy Sector Monitoring: IPP agreements and the broader energy sector will be monitored jointly by the government and JI.
- Income Tax on Landlords: Federal and provincial governments will collaborate to implement income tax on landlords.
- Reduction in Power Prices: The per unit price of electricity will be reduced over the next one and a half months, and power bills will be slashed. A Rs50 billion subsidy will be provided for consumers using 200 units of electricity.
- Trader Concerns: A committee will address traders’ concerns, with ongoing meetings between government and JI representatives.
