The election for the next chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) will be held in November this year. The incumbent, Greg Barclay, is reportedly going to retire after serving for four years.
There are reports that the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jay Shah, will contest for the post and could become the youngest ever to hold the position.
The ICC will hold its annual conference in Colombo later in July, but according to a report in Cricbuzz, the timeline for the election of the next chairman could be formalized during the meeting.
Shah has not commented on whether he wants to contest the elections, but there are reports that he aims to bring changes to the way the ICC functions, especially after the controversy over the organization of the recent T20 World Cup co-hosted by the USA and Caribbean islands.
The reports further stated that the ICC has amended the tenure of the chairman. The new head of cricket’s global governing body will serve for a period of three years, as opposed to two years previously, but can only be reelected once, unlike twice before.
Shah has been involved in cricket administration since 2009 and has previously served as the joint secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association. He joined the BCCI in 2015 and was elected board secretary in September 2019.
