KARACHI: Outraged by prolonged load-shedding amid soaring heat in Karachi, residents of Liaquatabad stormed the K-Electric (KE) office on Tuesday. The incident in the FC Area saw protestors vandalizing the office and damaging several parked vehicles.
The frustration over the lack of electricity has reached a boiling point, with residents feeling neglected and unheard. The protest spilled onto the main road near Shafiq Mor, causing a traffic jam.
K-Electric, the city’s power provider, condemned the attack and the damage to their property. A spokesperson for the company stated they are taking the matter seriously and are investigating the incident.
The unrest has led to the filing of a case against the protestors. Police confirmed that a case has been registered against the individuals involved in the vandalism and rioting, with charges including public disturbance and property damage.
Earlier, the Sindh High Court expressed displeasure over loadshedding in economically disadvantaged areas, reprimanding the K-Electric lawyer in a case related to unannounced power cuts in Jamshed Quarters on Jahangir Road. Justice Salahuddin, hearing the petition, asked the company’s counsel to submit an affidavit detailing the extent of load-shedding in the area.
