Uber on Tuesday announced to cease its operations in Lahore, Pakistan – the only city where it still operated under this name – and will be taken over by subsidiary Careem in Punjab’s provincial capital.
“We’ve made the decision to cease operating the Uber app in Pakistan,” a spokesperson for Uber was quoted as saying in Dawn.com.
“Our subsidiary brand Careem will maintain its operations, offering ride-hailing services through the Careem app across Pakistan and fostering earning prospects for drivers,” the spokesperson added.
This decision aligns with Uber’s global expansion strategy, which involves consolidating or integrating operations with its subsidiaries.

In October 2022, Uber announced the cessation of its app operations in Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar, and Islamabad. Until now, the Uber app was solely accessible in Lahore.
Meanwhile, Careem, as Uber’s subsidiary, will persist in delivering its services in Pakistan, presently spanning 10 cities: Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Multan, Faisalabad, Abbottabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Quetta.
In June 2022, Careem also suspended its food delivery operations in Pakistan, redirecting its focus towards ride-hailing and delivery services.
