KARACHI: officials from the Sindh Revenue Board (SRB) have closed two outlets of the popular burger restaurant chain Burger O’clock due to alleged evasion of sales tax.
The sealed branches were situated at Dolmen Mall Clifton and Sindhi Muslim Cooperative Housing Society. The SRB stated that the restaurants manipulated sales figures, resulting in significant losses in Sindh Sales Tax (SST) revenue.
This enforcement action occurred just 20 days after the SRB sealed two outlets of the Red Apple restaurant chain on similar grounds on November 23.
According to the SRB, Burger O’clock violated the Sindh Sales Tax on Services Act 2011 and the Sindh Sales Tax Special Procedure Rules 2022, despite previous assurances of compliance. These rules require large restaurants to integrate point-of-sale systems with the SRB for real-time tax monitoring. However, Burger O’clock failed to remit the evaded tax amounts.
Through consecutive punitive measures, the SRB has emphatically communicated its zero-tolerance stance toward eateries evading tax responsibilities. The authority has pledged equally stringent penalties for other restaurants that violate provincial taxation rules. It remains committed to enhancing tax compliance monitoring throughout Sindh.
