Growing threat of instability

Inayat Shamsi by Inayat Shamsi
November 7, 2023

In recent times, a worrying resurgence in terrorism is casting a shadow of apprehension over our country, raising the specter of potential disruptions to our law and order. This week, a highly sensitive military installation, Mianwali Air Base, fell victim to an attack. Just days prior, terrorists targeted two security force vehicles in Balochistan, resulting in the tragic loss of 14 soldiers. In both Dera Ismail Khan and Mianwali itself, various attacks by terrorists on our security forces have occurred.

The consecutive acts of terrorism that have unfolded in recent days sound a warning bell about the gravity and peril of the situation. While the security forces have managed to eliminate the terrorists in retaliatory actions and thwarted their malicious intentions of inflicting substantial harm upon our country, defense institutions, and the country as a whole, these incidents are deeply disconcerting.

The audacious attempt to breach Mianwali Air Base and inflict severe damage on sensitive defense installations, military assets, and strategic facilities was successfully repelled by our forces, resulting in the elimination of all attacking terrorists. Equally troubling is the fact that terrorists were able to target such a significant objective and make an endeavor to harm it. This underscores the terrorists’ capability to carry out violent operations across the country at their discretion.

The responsibility for the Mianwali incident has purportedly been claimed by an obscure extremist organization, a name that emerged only a few months ago. This organization has also claimed responsibility for various other terrorist incidents previously. Nonetheless, it appears more likely that this new name conceals the involvement of the same old group of terrorists and extremists, rather than representing an entirely fresh organization embarking on such grand-scale operations.

This tactic is a known ruse used by malevolent actors to divert the attention of security agencies and mislead the public, as these established hostile elements execute their actions under a new guise. Caretaker Home Minister Sarfraz Bugti rightly points out that the names of the terrorists involved in the DI Khan, Pasni, and Mianwali attacks may differ, but the hidden adversary remains unchanged. Moreover, given the occurrence of numerous previous terrorist incidents prior to the emergence of this new organization, there is little doubt that terrorist elements have been involved in those as well. Furthermore, the organization’s name may be new, but the enemy of the country is an old one. Regardless of the titles they adopt or the justifications they concoct, sowing terror and causing harm in a Muslim country can never align with the principles of Islam.

At a time when the Muslim world’s hearts are heavy due to the brutal Israeli bombardment in Gaza, the shameful act of targeting military installations in an Islamic country by those who claim to be Muslims is deeply troubling. These terrorists lack any semblance of Islamic values or humanity; they are waging a war fueled by ego and prejudice, which finds no support in religious teachings.

Given the nature of the attack on Mianwali Air Base and past occurrences, we cannot entirely rule out the possibility of Indian involvement. While Pakistan’s forces are to be commended for their unwavering dedication to safeguarding the country and its citizens day and night, these consecutive terrorism incidents underscore the need for improved intelligence capabilities. It is imperative that our intelligence agencies enhance their capabilities to prevent any such acts in the future.
