ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has asked Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan to continue his work during the rule of the interim government.
Awan was appointed in March this year after the resignation of Shehzad Ata Elahi. The president had appointed Awan as the AGP under Article 100 of the Constitution on the advice of the prime minister.
Awan is currently defending a case regarding the trial of May 9 rioters in military courts. The court is hearing the case filed by several respondents including PTI Chairman Imran Khan.
He is also defending various pieces of legislation including the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Act, 2023 introduced by the outgoing government and were challenged in the apex court.
The AGP plays the role of a bridge between the government and the judiciary on critical matters. The government appoints a legal expert to the post who enjoys the trust of all stakeholders.
The government informally discusses with the head of the judiciary before appointing the AGP. It has been learned that the Awan enjoys the trust of several members of the senior judiciary.
It must be mentioned Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial will retire next month and Justice Qazi Faez Isa will take over the post as the top judge of the apex court.
Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar is also set to hold deliberations on the interim cabinet. After assuming responsibility, he is expected to announce the cabinet positions.
According to reports former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Ahsan Bhoon and noted lawyer Ahmad Irfan Aslam are the favorites for the post of law minister.
