Senator Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar has been chosen as the caretaker prime minister of Pakistan.
The much-anticipated announcement comes after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and outgoing Opposition Leader in the National Assembly (NA) Raja Riaz reached a consensus over Kakar’s name for the coveted post.
According to a statement by the PM’s Office (PMO), the prime minister and opposition leader have sent advice regarding the appointment of Kakar as the caretaker prime minister to President Alvi.
Riaz confirmed the name of Kakar for the post was given by him which the prime minister accepted.
“We had earlier that the caretaker PM should be someone from a smaller province. We reached a consensus that Anwarul Haq Kakar will be the caretaker PM,” Riaz said.
“I had given this name and the PM has consented to this name. The PM and I have signed on the summary,” he added.
Brief Profile
Anwar ul Haq Kakar has been a member of the Senate since March 2018. Kakar was elected to the Senate as an independent candidate on general seat from Balochistan in 2018 and was expected to remain till March 2024.
He took oath as Senator on 12 March 2018. He co-launched a new political party Balochistan Awami Party (BAP). He has also served as a former spokesman for the Government of Balochistan.
He worked as chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, and as a member of the Business Advisory Committee, Finance and Revenue, Foreign Affairs and Science and Technology.
Kakar also undertook the role of parliamentary leader for the Balochistan Awami Party within the Senate. He was replaced as the BAP chairman five months ago.
He is a graduate of the National Defence University (NDU) and University of Balochistan.
