KARACHI: After being idle for nearly two months after their April 2023 launch, the electric buses are scheduled to resume service on two city routes today (Monday) as a result of the importation of a new charging system from China. The earlier system had begun “malfunctioning” a few weeks after the service began.
The electric buses launched in February this year as part of the Sindh government’s initiative to provide eco-friendly and affordable public transport to the citizens. However, within a few weeks, the battery charger started malfunctioning, forcing the buses to stop running on two routes about two months ago.
Sindh Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced this on Sunday while addressing a press conference to inform the public about arrival of the new charging system that would help resume the operation of 15 electric buses.
“The chargers for electric buses have arrived, and starting from tomorrow, these buses will once again operate on the roads of Karachi,” said the Sindh transport minister.
He also said that an additional fleet of buses will arrive in Karachi on July 11, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to optimize public transport. He said that the new buses will replace the older ones and improve the urban travel facilities.
