California: Google has decided to close email accounts that have been inactive for 2 years.
The company has introduced a new policy that will be effective from December 2023 and will include Google Accounts for Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar, YouTube, and Photos.
Google said in a blog post that inactive accounts are more vulnerable to being hacked, and inactive accounts are less likely to use the 2-factor authentication setting.
According to the blog post, inactive accounts have weak security and once they are hacked, they can be used for illegal purposes or spreading spam content.
That’s why the company has decided to close inactive email accounts, for which the first thing to do is to delete Google accounts that have never been used after creation. Multiple notifications will also be sent to the user’s main email address as well as the backup email address.
Google said that this policy will apply to personal Google accounts, while accounts linked to organizations will not be affected.
