RAWALPINDI: The head of the Awami Muslim League (AML), Sheikh Rashid has warned that Shehbaz Sharif is heading towards a minefield of contempt of court and Article 6 (by disobeying Supreme Court’s election orders).
Taking to Twitter on Sunday, Sheikh Rashid expressed fears that the crisis could become even more serious in the coming days, and suggested that if the demand for simultaneous elections on a single day is to be met, the government should better dissolve the National Assembly.
Referring to a lawyers’ convention held in Lahore the other day, Sheikh Rashid noted that the lawyers’ fraternity had declared that the Supreme Court was their red line and that elections in Punjab would have to be held on May 14.

Criticizing the recent hike in petrol prices, he said that the government had dropped “petrol bombs” on the Eid celebrations, adding that another 3.9 million people would fall below the poverty line due to the country’s lack of foreign exchange reserves which were insufficient to meet one month of import demands.
Sheikh Rashid further criticized the government’s fight against the judiciary and said that it showed their mental imbalance as they seemed least concerned about gas and electricity problems.
He warned that elections would have to be held, or else the matter would be decided on the streets. The AML chief also stated that Nawaz Sharif would not be returning to Pakistan and that an agreement with the IMF was unlikely in April. He added that the court would use its constitutional power if any attempt was made to deceive it.
