ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a code of conduct for both national and international media in the run-up to the country’s general election.
In a series of instructions, the ECP has directed that no material against the integrity of the country or the independence of the judiciary be published or released. The international media has also been instructed to submit their visa applications on time and follow the ECP’s instructions.
The ECP’s statement also emphasized that statements aimed at harming national unity and disrupting public order will not be published during the election campaign. The code of conduct extends to newspapers, digital and social media, and legal action will be taken against personal attacks, including those based on religion, race, gender, and caste.
The electoral watchdog further urged the media to avoid any material that may disturb law and order on polling day. The media has also been prohibited from participating in government-sponsored political campaigns, and they must contact the ECP to verify allegations made by one candidate against another.
In addition, the media is barred by the ECP from reporting election results for an hour after polling ends. The ECP has taken these steps to ensure fair and transparent elections and to maintain peace and stability in the country.
