KARACHI: Animals at the Karachi Zoo have been forced to starve for the second successive day as food supply to the metropolis zoo was cut over unpaid bills.
The contractor is asking for Rs8.2 million in unpaid bills as the row between the Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) and the food supplier became messy.
As per details, following a warning, the contractor shut off the food supply on Tuesday, March 21. The contractors had earlier threatened to stop providing food if their overdue costs weren’t paid in a letter to the KMC administrator, according to Aaj News.
“We have submitted an unpaid bill of Rs8.2 million in your department and despite continuous requests, the bill is not cleared,” wrote Mahmood Enterprises – who said they had the contract of supplying food for the animals on monthly basis.
The contractor stated that suppliers were now refusing to provide the food on credit.
“It is a request, to release our outstanding payments immediately and we have submitted a few applications in this regard as well. If the payments were not cleared, we won’t be able to supply food for animals from March 21, 2023,” the contractor concluded.
The animals were left to starve after the supply was shut off.
The zoo’s management said that a lack of sufficient nourishment had caused the animals and birds to weaken. Several issues have recently afflicted the Karachi Zoo. The zoo administration’s alleged carelessness has resulted in the deaths of numerous animals and birds.
