The trailer for Netflix’s Blonde has released and the actress of the movie has been facing backlash regarding her Cuban accent.
Excitement has been building for the movie in part due to its NC-17 rating, the first of its kind on Netflix. However, there has also been a lot of controversy surrounding Blonde, with concerns that it will further exploit Marilyn Monroe’s life and trauma, which happened profusely when the iconic movie star was alive.
Now, the release of the trailer has brought additional criticism of Ana de Armas’s portrayal of the tragic Hollywood figure, and it’s entirely absurd. Adapted from Joyce Carol Oates’s novel of the same name, Blonde depicts a fictionalized version of Marilyn Monroe’s life.
In the works since 2010, the movie was originally to star British-Australian actress Naomi Watts, then American actress Jessica Chastain, but ultimately the role of Marilyn went to Ana de Armas, a Cuban-Spanish actress who transitioned to English-speaking roles with the 2015 thriller Knock Knock and who most recently co-starred in Netflix’s The Gray Man.

Blonde is written and directed by Andrew Dominik, an Australian filmmaker who made his name with the 2000 crime film Chopper and the Brad Pitt-starring elegiac Western, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
Blonde is not a straight biography of Monroe, but instead a heavily fictionalized version of her story, based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates. Dominik has been trying to get it made since as early as 2010. The book features some shocking, graphic scenes, and it seems Dominik has insisted that these make it into his movie. Netflix will open “Blonde” globally on September 28.
