KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced to bring hybrid buses for public transportations after nearly fourteen years.
Sindh Transportation Minister Owais Shah said the first consignment of 121 diesel-electric hybrid buses for Karachi and other cities has departed from two ports in China for the metropolis. The buses are expected to arrive within a month.
The Sindh government has established bus stops for the hybrid inter-city transport project, The buses will be run on more than 15 routes in the six districts of Karachi.
The Sindh Transport Department has purchased 240 modern buses for Karachi and 10 for Larkana. Karachi Administrator Syed Murtaza Wahab also confirmed the development. He said the date got delayed because of covid surge due to which Shanghai Port was closed.
The provincial cabinet had approved Rs8 billion for the procurement plan for which the transport and mass transit department had hired a professional consultant.
Other cities like Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpurkhas and Shaheed Benazirabad would receive their share in second procurement under the Peoples Bus Service project.
The provincial government remained under immense criticism over its failure to address deteriorating transport system of Karachi. At least five transport ministers had announced projects but it could not be executed.
