DUBLIN: Former UFC two-weight champion Conor McGregor was arrested for “alleged road traffic violations” in Dublin, his spokesperson confirmed on Thursday.
“McGregor was driving to the gym when he was stopped by Irish police force for alleged road traffic violations,” the spokesperson told Reuters. According to the spokesperson, McGregor passed the drug and alcohol tests taken at the station.
The Notorious’ car — worth approximately $260,000 — was reportedly seized at the scene before eventually being returned to the former two-division UFC champion.
He was taken to a police station where he was later charged and released on bail, the Irish Independent reported. The 33-year-old will appear before a district court next month.
A statement from local police read: “Gardai arrested a man aged in his 30s in relation to an incident of dangerous driving in the Palmerstown area yesterday evening, Tuesday 22nd March 2022.”
“The man was taken to Lucan Garda Station where he was later charged. He has been released pending an appearance before Blanchardstown District Court at a later date,” the statement concluded.
The Irish Independent added that a dangerous driving charge in Ireland can carry punishments of up to $7000 in fines and even a potential six-month imprisonment.
McGregor has received a number of previous driving convictions, and pleaded guilty in 2019 to common assault. He lost to Dustin Poirier in his last fight in July 2021, suffering a freak leg break that required surgery.
Poirier had defeated McGregor for the second time in six months last year when the latter was unable to continue after the first round at Ultimate Fighting Championship 264.
McGregor has been unable to recapture his fearsome mixed martial arts (MMA) form over the past half-decade — and despite his protestations, there was little in the first round at UFC 264 to suggest McGregor was back in elite form.
