At least six people including five women were drowned when a car plunged into Neelum River in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s Neelum Valley, authorities have confirmed.
According to the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Neelum, the incident involved a tourist vehicle that fell into a deep gorge near the Chalhana area of the Neelum River.
Six people lost their lives in the accident, and their bodies have been recovered. The car was carrying seven passengers, including five women and a child.
The DDMA further said that one child remains missing, and police and rescue teams are actively conducting search operations. All the deceased were residents of Muzaffarabad, Azad Kashmir.
Earlier this year, a similar tragedy occurred when a vehicle plunged into the Chitral River near Kuju village, resulting in the deaths of three individuals.
According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sajjad Hussain of Chitral city, the accident was caused by the driver’s loss of control due to excessive speed. He confirmed that two of the victims were identified as Hanif and Akram Khan, residents of Prayeet village. The identity of the third victim could not be established.
Hussain stated that teams from Rescue 1122 and the local police promptly arrived at the scene and launched a search and rescue operation. However, the vehicle was recovered without any occupants, as the strong river currents had swept the bodies away.
