The LPG Action Committee has reported that half of the LPG shops in Karachi have been forced to shut down due to a police crackdown.
During a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, Ali Haider, head of the LPG Action Committee, along with other representatives, expressed concerns over police harassment and administrative negligence, which have made it increasingly difficult for shop owners to continue their businesses.
As a result, 50% of the city’s 5,000 LPG shops have closed.
Haider warned that if the behavior of the police and administration does not improve, more shopkeepers will be compelled to close their businesses and go on strike. He emphasized that the LPG sector contributes millions of rupees in tax revenue to the government annually.
The committee head called for an end to what he described as unjust police interference, while expressing readiness for constructive dialogue with the authorities.
He demanded the immediate reopening of shops that are operating in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs).
For shops that have not yet complied with the regulations, Haider requested a 15-day grace period, after which non-compliance should be appropriately addressed.
He also highlighted the issue of police harassment of vehicles transporting LPG, which is severely disrupting the supply chain. Drivers are being unnecessarily targeted, further complicating the situation.
Haider criticized the administration’s failure to control the sale of substandard LPG cylinders across Karachi and surrounding areas, with low-quality products arriving unchecked from Gujranwala and Lahore.
