KARACHI: An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale jolted several parts of Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the wee hours of Sunday, the meteorological department said.
According to the meteorological department, tremors were felt in Hyderabad and Kotri at 5:27am this morning while several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were also jolted by the earthquake.
These areas include Swat, Shangla, Buner, Lower Dir, Upper Dir, Chitral and Malakand. These areas were jolted by the quake at 4.45am on Sunday morning.
Minutes after the tremors were felt in the metropolis, news channels and social media platforms were stormed with messages from social media users saying that the tremors were felt in several districts of the provinces.
Residents across these cities panicked, and rushed out into the open spaces, reciting the Kalima and other verses from the Holy Quran. There are no immediate reports of any loss of life or property.
On December 8, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Karachi late. Tremors were felt in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Gulshan-i-Hadeed, Malir and Scheme-33.
According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre, the earthquake’s epicentre was 15 km North of DHA Karachi and had a depth of 15km. It added that the quake occurred at at 17:16:04 UTC and had a longitude of 67.29 East and a latitude of 25.17 North.
In October, at least 15 people were killed while more than 150 were injured after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Balochistan. The worst-affected area was the remote mountainous district of Harnai, where landslides blocked some roads, hampering rescue efforts.
Harnai district, 95km northeast of Quetta, bore the brunt of the quake where casualties occurred and hundreds of mud-houses collapsed or were damaged, rendering thousands of people homeless.
