ANKARA: An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck Western Turkey region on Wednesday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

The quake was at a depth of 2 km (1.24 miles), EMSC said. Quake was centered in Duzce province, the country’s disaster management agency says, with tremors felt in Istanbul, Ankara and other regions.

According to local media reports, at least 35 people were injured in the quake while estimates of the quake’s depth vary from 2km to 10km.

Türkiye’s disaster management agency AFAD said earthquake, which struck at 4:08 am [local time] on Wednesday, was centered about 14 kilometres northwest of Duzce, in the Golyaka district, and that 35 people were injured, one of them critically, and reported 70 aftershocks in the region.

There are reports of power being disrupted in the region, as well as some residents jumping from balconies.

Another 4.7 quake was reported some 20 minutes after the first. Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said there had been no information about loss of life.

“Our teams are supplying blankets, food and water. Additional blood supplies were sent to hospitals that may be needed in the region,” Turkish Red Crescent president Kerem Kinik said.
