Police in Karachi have arrested 3 more inmates who escaped from Malir Jail during the earthquake, as reported by national media on Wednesday.
According to jail authorities, with the latest arrests, the total number of recaptured inmates who had escaped due to the earthquake in Karachi has reached 94. Jail officials stated that 122 prisoners are still on the run, and a search operation is ongoing. Police are raiding the homes of the escaped inmates.
Authorities said that a case regarding the incident has been registered at Shah Latif Town Police Station on the complaint of Deputy Jail Superintendent Zulfiqar Ali Pirzada. The FIR includes charges of encounter with police, attempted murder, anti-terrorism, and other sections. Jail officials stated that inmates who return voluntarily will be given leniency.
It is worth noting that the continuous tremors in the city affected not only residential areas but also Malir Jail. At around 1 AM on Monday night, tremors were felt in Malir and surrounding areas, prompting the jail administration to evacuate inmates of two circles from their barracks for safety.
According to jail authorities, during this time the inmates caused a disturbance, clashed with police personnel, and began to escape. Seeing the crowd of fleeing prisoners, jail police and FC personnel resorted to aerial firing. 213 inmates escaped from Malir Jail, of whom 94 have so far been recaptured.
