The nation is observing the 27th death anniversary of renowned Qawwal Ghulam Farid Sabri.
He died on this day in 1994 in Karachi, after suffering a heart attack. Today marks his 24th death anniversary.
Their first qawwali, Mera Koi Nahin Hai Tere Siwa, released in 1958 got them registered on the popularity chart. That followed with one hit after the other. Bhardo Jholi Meri Ya Muhammad, Sarela Makan Se Talab Hui, Taajdar-e-Haram and Saqiya Aur Pila are some of their most acclaimed qawwalis.

Sabri’s grandfather was ‘Mehboob Baksh Ranji’ who was claimed to the ruler of Music. His family migrated from India to Pakistan and settled down in Karachi after the partition. The acclaimed qawwal made his first public performance at the Urs of Sufi saint Mubarik Shah in a crowd of thousands in 1946 in Kalyana.
