IG Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon has stated that 213 prisoners escaped from Malir Jail, out of which 78 have been re-arrested.
Speaking to the media in Karachi, the IG Sindh said that there are a total of 6,000 prisoners in Malir Jail. After yesterday’s earthquake tremors, prisoners from two circles were brought outside, after which the inmates began to run toward the main gate of the jail.
According to IG Sindh, the prisoners in both circles were involved in drug-related cases. Jail police are stationed inside the main gate, while FC personnel are deployed outside. Upon seeing the crowd of prisoners, the jail police and FC personnel fired shots into the air”. He added.
The IG stated that 213 prisoners escaped from Malir Jail, out of which 78 have been arrested, and a strategy has been devised to apprehend the remaining fugitives.
He added that security arrangements have been enhanced inside and around the jail, and additional police forces are conducting search operations in the surrounding residential areas.
