Pakistan government is planning to end the protected category of consumers using up to 200 units monthly.Â
The move will affect low-income users, as the price will also increase.
Who are protected and unprotected consumers?
The total number of household electricity consumers across the country exceeds 2.28 million.
These consumers are divided into two main categories based on their monthly electricity consumption:
Protected Consumers: Households consuming up to 200 units of electricity per month.
How protected status works?
To qualify, your household (single-phase meter <5 kW) must consistently consume ≤200 units per month for six consecutive months.
If you exceed 200 units even for one month, you are classified as non-protected and cannot return to protected status for six months, even if usage drops afterward.
After the six-month period, if monthly use remains ≤200 units, protected rates can be restored.
