At least 20 people were killed on Thursday when assailants opened fire on passenger vehicles in the Uchat area of Kurram district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as reported by Aaj News.
According to a report by Business Recorder, the convoy, which was traveling from Parachinar to Peshawar, came under attack by unidentified armed men who opened fire at it.
This year, Pakistan has witnessed an increase in terrorist activities, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
On Wednesday, at least 12 security personnel were martyred in a suicide bombing in Bannu District, KPK.
According to a statement from ISPR, “On 19 November 2024, Khawarij attempted to attack a Joint Check Post in the MaliKhel area of Bannu District. In the subsequent exchange of fire, six Khawarij were killed.”
The attack on the post was successfully thwarted by the troops, forcing the attackers to ram an explosive-laden vehicle into the post’s perimeter wall, as confirmed by the military’s media wing.
In October, a fresh tribal conflict in Kurram district claimed the lives of at least 16 people, including three women and two children.
‘No other choice but to crush terrorists’
During a meeting of the Federal Apex Committee of the National Action Plan on Tuesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif pledged to eliminate terrorist elements for the peace and progress of the nation.
The meeting reviewed the changing security situation and ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and other critical issues, including the general law and order situation.
Addressing the committee, the Prime Minister described terrorism as a major challenge for Pakistan.
The committee approved a comprehensive military operation against terrorist groups operating in Balochistan, including the Majeed Brigade, BLA, BLF, and BRAS. These groups have been targeting civilians and foreign nationals in an attempt to hinder Pakistan’s economic progress by instilling insecurity at the behest of hostile foreign powers.
