In a troubling incident in Orangi Town, Karachi, a mob attacked a rehabilitation center, forcibly releasing individuals undergoing treatment for drug addiction.
According to initial findings, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Mominabad Police Station said that the attack may not have been orchestrated by drug dealers, but rather triggered by a disgruntled local resident.
The SHO said that tensions had been simmering in the neighborhood, with residents accusing the patients of engaging in theft and other criminal activities. These allegations may have contributed to the outbreak of violence.
Eyewitnesses reported that groups of individuals surrounded the facility, ultimately freeing approximately 127 patients. The assailants ransacked the premises, assaulted staff members, and severely damaged a police mobile unit.
The targeted facility, known as the Sunshine Rehab Center, is operated and funded by Sindh Police officer Abdul Khaliq Ansari. At the time of the attack, 10 to 12 staff members were on duty, attending to patients.
The management of the rehabilitation center has submitted a formal statement to the police. Authorities are currently in the process of registering a First Information Report (FIR) and have launched efforts to locate and recover the escaped individuals.
