PESHAWAR: At least 10 people including several policemen were injured in an explosion at Bara Bazaar in Khyber district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Rescue officials said there are reports of an official being martyred in the incident. Six injured were provided medical aid on the spot, and the three others were taken to a local hospital.
One injured was shifted to the Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) in Peshawar, rescue officials said. One person was buried when the roof of the building collapsed due to the explosion.
Heavy machinery was dispatched to the spot after the incident. As per details, the blast was followed by intense firing near police station located in Bara market, Khyber.
Initial reports said the injured policemen have been shifted to the CMH, while the market has been closed for security reasons after the incident.
Police said bomb disposal squad and Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) teams were sent to the crime scene to ascertain the nature of the explosion. Police mentioned that the explosion occurred during a security check at the main gate of a compound that houses Bara Police Statio and other government offices.
Hayatabad Medical Complex administration said that a body and four injured — including three cops — were brought to the medical facility.
KP Inspector General Akhtar Hayat confirmed the explosion was a suicide attack. Speaking to a private channel, he said two suicide bombers tried to enter the premises of a public building one from the main gate and the other from the backside.
The police chief said both the attackers were killed in retaliatory fire after being intercepted by police. He said police have obtained DNA samples of the suicide bombers for further investigation.
