The global population is set to reach 8.09 billion people on New Year’s Day, having grown by over 71 million in 2024, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates released on Monday.
The 0.9% increase in 2024 represents a slight slowdown compared to 2023, when the global population grew by 75 million. For January 2025, the estimates predict 4.2 births and 2.0 deaths per second worldwide.
Since the start of the 2020s, the U.S. population has grown by nearly 9.7 million, reflecting a 2.9% growth rate. In contrast, the 2010s saw a 7.4% growth, marking the slowest rate since the 1930s.
In the United States, the population grew by 2.6 million in 2024, bringing the total to 341 million people by New Year’s Day.
Moreover, international migration will contribute one new person to the U.S. population every 23.2 seconds. Combining births, deaths, and net migration, the U.S. population will increase by one person every 21.2 seconds, according to the Census Bureau.
