Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati dismissed rumors on Thursday suggesting he might be appointed as the province’s new chief minister.
Swati described the reports as “editorial disinformation” and clarified that he had not been approached for the role. He emphasized that the party had entrusted him with the position of speaker, which he considers to be ample recognition for his efforts.
His statement comes amid growing speculation about potential changes in the provincial leadership. Swati made it clear that he remains focused on his current responsibilities within the assembly.
Recent reports have indicated that Bushra Bibi, the wife of PTI founder Imran Khan, had warned current Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur that he could lose his position if he failed to deliver during the Islamabad march. Thousands of PTI supporters participated in the march on November 24, traveling from various cities to Islamabad for Khan’s “final call” aimed at securing the release of party members and restoring democracy. Despite facing roadblocks and internet disruptions, the protesters successfully reached the capital.
The protests, however, resulted in tragic losses, with at least six individuals—including a police officer and three Rangers officials—reported dead over three days of unrest. The march was eventually called off, marking the third time the party had halted its protest after reaching its intended destination. PTI leadership also expressed concerns over low participation from supporters in Punjab during the lead-up to the march.
