The so-called sex tape scandal in Equatorial Guinea is much more than just a viral video controversy. It is a complex political drama linked to the country’s leadership succession.
Over the past two weeks, a series of explicit videos featuring Baltasar Ebang Mr Engonga, a senior government official, have leaked onto social media. The videos—ranging from an estimated 150 to over 400—show Mr Engonga engaged in sexual acts with several women, many of whom are believed to be wives or relatives of powerful figures in the government. These videos have shocked the small Central African nation and captured international attention.
While some of the women in the videos appear to have known they were being filmed, verifying these details is challenging, as Equatorial Guinea is known for its strict media controls and lack of press freedom. Mr Engonga, who is often referred to as “Bello” due to his good looks, is a nephew of the country’s long-serving president, Teodoro Obiang Nguema. As the son of another influential figure, Mr Engonga is considered by some to be a potential contender for the presidency.
The scandal has sparked speculation that the leaks are part of a broader political maneuver. Some believe the aim is to discredit Mr Engonga ahead of a potential power struggle in the ruling family. President Obiang, who has ruled Equatorial Guinea for 45 years, is one of the world’s longest-serving leaders, but his reign has been marked by growing economic problems and human rights concerns.
The scandal broke in the wake of Mr Engonga’s arrest on October 25th, when he was accused of embezzling significant funds from the state. After being detained and taken to the notorious Black Beach prison, intimate videos of him with various women began circulating. These clips quickly spread through WhatsApp and Telegram groups, sparking outrage in the country. While it is still unclear who is behind the leaks, many suspect it may be political enemies within the security services seeking to tarnish Mr Engonga’s reputation.
In response, Vice-President Teodoro Obiang Mangue (the president’s son), ordered a crackdown on the distribution of the videos. He demanded that telecom companies find ways to block the spread of the clips and announced plans to install security cameras in government offices to prevent such incidents from happening again. He also warned that any officials caught engaging in inappropriate behavior would be suspended.
The scandal has attracted significant international attention, and online searches for “Equatorial Guinea” have surged, particularly in countries like Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. However, some activists argue that the scandal, while eye-catching, is just a symptom of deeper issues in the country. They point out that the real problem is the country’s corrupt political system, which is marked by a lack of political opposition, human rights abuses, and a concentration of wealth among a small elite.
For many, the sex tapes highlight the decadent lifestyle of Equatorial Guinea’s ruling class and the political infighting that continues behind the scenes.
