A peace agreement has been finalized by the Grand Jirga to restore stability in Kurram District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Under the terms of the agreement, warning tribes have committed to surrendering their heavy weapons to the government. The meeting, held in Kohat, culminated in both parties signing the peace accord, marking a significant step towards peace in Kurram.
As part of the agreement, any party found using weapons will face fines. The 2008 Murree Agreement will also be enforced, requiring all parties to disarm.
After three weeks of deliberations to address the district’s security challenges, the Jirga has successfully reached a consensus on all points. The agreement, which had been delayed due to incomplete attendance by Jirga members, was finally signed.
The session, held at Kohat Fort and chaired by Commissioner Kohat Muatasim Billah, involved in-depth discussions on various matters.
The administration has raised concerns about reopening roads while heavy weapons remain in the area, citing serious security risks. In the meantime, helicopter services are continuing to deliver essential supplies, including medicines, to the district.
