A video showing police officers, both in uniform and plain clothes, allegedly beating men and women during a raid in Karachi’s Baldia Town has gone viral, sparking outrage on social media.
The footage shows officers standing in a street in Baldia Town, wielding batons against civilians. According to the video, plainclothes officers struck women and men with sticks and also fired warning shots in the air to disperse a crowd that had gathered in protest against the raid.
Police officials have claimed that the officers involved are not part of the Kemari district or Special Investigation Unit and said that an inquiry into the incident has been launched.
Incidents of police brutality, including the use of excessive force during raids and protests, are not uncommon in Pakistan, with human rights groups frequently highlighting abuses by law enforcement agencies.
