PESHAWAR: Thousands of people attacked the Khazana police station on Charsadda Road in Peshawar, demanding that officers hand over a man accused of desecrating the Quran.
The crowd, estimated at nearly 2,000, injured several police officials, including a senior officer, while attempting to breach the station.
According to a report by Dawn News, the incident began after police detained Humayun Ullah, accused of making derogatory remarks about the Quran during a domestic argument with his brother. Police officer Nasir Khan said that Ullah was arrested as an angry mob attempted to seize him on the street.
Protesters damaged the main gate of the police station, pelted stones at its premises, and threatened to burn it down if the man was not handed over.
Video footage circulating on social media showed hundreds of people blocking nearby roads, with gunshots audible in the background.
To disperse the crowd, police resorted to firing tear gas and shots into the air. Despite the chaotic scene, authorities maintained custody of the suspect and are continuing their investigation.
