The United States has issued a new travel advisory regarding travel to India for its citizens, advising them to exercise caution before heading to the country.
According to a report, the U.S. Department of State issued a new Level 2 travel advisory for India on June 16, advising its citizens to be cautious while traveling there.
Referring to the advisory, Pakistani media reported that incidents of rape and sexual assault at tourist spots are among the rising crimes in India; therefore, women are advised not to travel alone to the country.
The U.S. Department of State’s advisory also stated that there is a possibility of terrorist attacks on tourist sites, shopping malls, and government locations.
It is noteworthy that violations of women’s rights and the number of rape cases are increasing in India. In 2022, more than 31,500 rape cases were reported in India, which averages out to 86 cases per day or one rape every 15 minutes.
According to estimates by the National Crime Records Bureau, the rape rate is 6.3 per 100,000 women, which is lower than the United States (38.4), but the actual number may be much higher due to underreporting caused by social stigma and police indifference.
Furthermore, these incidents have increased over time, with more than 250,000 rape cases reported from 2017 to 2025 — over 90 incidents daily. The Indian state of Uttar Pradesh tops the list, with an average of 11 cases reported daily.
