KARACHI: A large areas of Karachi on Friday received heavy rainfall, causing urban-flooding in some areas as Pakistan Metrological department predicts more rainfall in the Eid-Ul-Adha holidays.
The incessant rain has exposed the awful drainage system of the biggest city of the country. Several main arteries and streets were flooded due to choked drains.
With plentiful clouds still over the city, the heavy and light showers are expected to continue on Saturday as well.
According to the Met Office, monsoon currents are continuously penetrating the country and are expected to weaken over the next 24 hours before strengthening over the weekend (9 and 10 July).
As per details, several parts of the city including, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Nazimabad, Gadap Town, Surjani Town, North Karachi, North Nazimabad, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Jinnah Old Terminal, Tariq Road, Defence View, FC Area, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Saddar, Guru Mandir, Shahrah-e-Faisal and other areas received downpour for several hours. Several vehicles got stuck on inundated roads near, causing massive traffic jams.
According to Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD), some 77 millimeters (mm) of rain was recorded in Gulshan-e-Hadeed while 44 mm was recorded in the Old Airport area and 31 mm in Jinnah Terminal.
The unabated rains in the morning increased the water level in Malir Nadi and it overflowed.

Rescue officials said several vehicles were also submerged in the water while the Superhighway road from Karachi to Hyderabad was closed for traffic due to the current situation.
