US President Donald Trump has made it clear that if no deal is reached with Iran, the chances of extending the ceasefire are “close to zero”, warning that war would be inevitable.
Speaking to US media, President Trump said the ceasefire with Iran will expire on Wednesday evening.
He added that if an agreement is not reached, there is little to no possibility of extending the truce. “There is no rush to make a bad deal. We will not act hastily, and we have plenty of time,” he said.
When asked whether fighting could begin immediately if no agreement is reached, Trump responded that war would be certain in the absence of a deal.
Pressed further on what would happen if the ceasefire period ends, Trump said: “A lot of bombs will start going off.”
In response to a question about whether Iran is still participating in the negotiations, Trump said Iran should be present at the talks. “We had agreed they would be there. They say we didn’t, but yes, it was agreed,” he stated.
“We will see whether they show up or not. If they don’t, that’s fine too,” he added.
When asked what he expects from the negotiating team in Islamabad, Trump said the objective is simple: Iran must not possess nuclear weapons. “We are not discussing anything else,” he emphasised.
The US president also said he had sent his “A-team” for the negotiations, adding that if the Iran conflict is resolved, oil prices would fall rapidly. “If Iran does what it should, oil prices will come down very quickly,” he said.
