Trump rejects Iran’s peace proposal as ‘UNACCEPTABLE’

WASHINGTON: Prospects for a swift resolution to the ten-week conflict between the United States and Iran dimmed significantly this weekend after President Donald Trump publicly dismissed Tehran’s latest diplomatic response.

The rejection followed an intense, four-day mediation marathon led by Qatar and Pakistan, leaving the world’s most critical oil transit route—the Strait of Hormuz—shrouded in uncertainty as both nations double down on their respective red lines.

Writing on Truth Social late Saturday, President Trump confirmed he had reviewed the documents delivered via Pakistani mediators but found the terms severely lacking.

In a post that signaled a return to maximum-pressure rhetoric, the President characterized the Iranian response as “totally unacceptable” and accused the leadership in Tehran of “playing games” with the United States for nearly half a century. Trump concluded his statement with a stark warning that “they will be laughing no longer,” suggesting that his patience with the diplomatic process is wearing thin.

Middle East observers say the core of the disagreement appears to center on Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

While the U.S. proposal demanded verifiable rollbacks of nuclear enrichment alongside a cessation of hostilities, reports indicate that Iran’s counter-proposal focused primarily on maritime security and the lifting of blockades. For the Trump administration, any deal that fails to provide a permanent solution to the nuclear issue is considered a non-starter, regardless of the concessions offered regarding the reopening of global shipping lanes.

This breakdown in communication, it may be added here, comes despite a frantic diplomatic offensive conducted between May 7 and May 10. Qatar has acted as the primary engine for de-escalation, with Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani conducting a series of high-stakes engagements with senior officials in Washington, Islamabad, and Riyadh. Throughout these discussions, Qatar reportedly took a firm line with Tehran, insisting that the Strait of Hormuz should not be used as a bargaining chip in geopolitical negotiations.

Pakistan also played a pivotal role by facilitating the direct transmission of messages, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif coordinating closely with Doha to bridge the gap between the warring parties. Despite these coordinated efforts to contain the regional crisis, the fundamental gap between U.S. nuclear demands and Iran’s security requirements remains unbridged.
