WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has announced to cut-off funding to the World Health Organization, accusing the WHO of mismanaging the coronavirus crisis.
Donald Trump blamed the WHO for propagating false information by saying, “The reliance of the organization is based on Chinese data that had likely caused a 20-fold increase in coronavirus cases worldwide,” he added.
Donald Trump called the WHO a ‘China-centric’ institution. However, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres responded to the US president’s accusation, by saying, “It was not the time to reduce the resources of WHO”.
He maintained that the organization was absolutely important to the world’s efforts to win the war against the COVID-19. “It is my belief that the World Health Organization must be supported,” Guterres asserted.
Last year, the US contributed $400 million to the WHO. Currently, there are more than 1.9 million confirmed COVID-19 cases, with more than 126,741 confirmed deaths, and 213 countries, areas or territories with cases of the coronavirus.
Some of the world leaders have eased the lockdown in the countries to revive the economy. Few shops in Austria and Italy reopened Tuesday, one day after Spain allowed construction and factory workers to return to their jobs.
