University Road in Karachi is set to be closed to traffic for seven weeks as the Karachi Water and Sewerage System Improvement Project (KWSSIP) begins new excavation work, bringing barriers and expected traffic congestion to one of the city’s busiest routes.
According to officials, the stretch of University Road from NIPA Chowrangi to the Federal Urdu University will remain closed from November 10 to December 30.
A senior official said that the closure is necessary to lay new 96-inch and 72-inch diameter pipelines, which are part of the extended K-IV water supply project.
The 2.7-kilometer section will form part of a new network aimed at improving Karachi’s water distribution system.
However, daily commuters and residents of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, and surrounding areas, already suffering from traffic jams and dust due to the Red Line BRT construction, are expected to face even greater difficulties.
Project documents show that Phase 1 of the pipeline work will cover NIPA Chowrangi to Federal Urdu University, while Phase 2 will extend from Hasan Square to NIPA.
Although authorities have set December 30 as the completion deadline, citizens remain skeptical given Karachi’s history of prolonged infrastructure delays.
