Police investigating Karachi’s largest robbery of the year have arrested a cash van driver and two security guards after uncovering evidence of alleged internal facilitation in the theft of Rs300 million, officials said on Monday.
According to investigators, initial findings indicate that chief crew member Wajid was the alleged mastermind behind the robbery and had planned the operation in advance with accomplices.
Police said initial investigations revealed that the cash was transferred from the cash van into a double-cabin vehicle during the robbery.
The four suspects travelling in the double-cabin vehicle were allegedly in contact with Wajid before and during the crime.
Police further claimed that after the robbery, the doors of the cash van were locked from the outside to create the impression of an external attack.
Evidence gathered during the initial inquiry pointed towards the involvement of the driver and two security guards, leading to their arrest. The suspects have been taken into custody for further interrogation.
Police said Wajid and several other alleged accomplices managed to flee the city following the robbery and efforts are underway to track and arrest them.
According to investigators, the vehicle carrying the cash had departed from the company’s Tariq Road office and was transporting approximately Rs300 million in 20 bags.
The probe revealed that the vehicle was stopped near the Water Pump in violation of standard operating procedures (SOPs), a development investigators believe played a key role in facilitating the robbery.
