Motorway police closed several major motorways in Punjab on Friday morning due to dense fog that blanketed multiple cities in the region, creating hazardous driving conditions.
The Lahore-Islamabad Motorway (M-2), Lahore-Multan Motorway (M-3), M-4 Motorway from Pindi Bhattian to Multan, and the M-5 Motorway from Multan to Taranda Muhammad Panah were all shut down in the early hours of Friday. The fog also significantly reduced visibility on the National Highway, including areas like Thokar Niaz Baig, Pattoki, Okara, and Sahiwal.
Motorway police spokesman Syed Imran Ahmad stated that the decision to close the motorways was made to ensure the safety and security of the public. “Given the dense fog and low visibility, it was crucial to prevent accidents and protect travelers,” he said.
Imran Ahmad urged drivers to exercise caution and maintain lane discipline in light of the poor visibility. He also emphasized that traveling during the day, particularly between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., is safer. “These are the best times to travel, as visibility improves during daylight,” he added.
Drivers are advised to use both front and rear lights while driving on the motorway and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Motorway police also urged travelers to contact their helpline, 130, for emergency assistance or guidance.
The police continue to monitor the situation, and further updates will be provided as conditions improve.
