After a disappointing box office performance, earning only $33 million, “The Watchers”, previously available exclusively for streaming on Max, has recently debuted on Netflix where it has quickly gained traction, securing the number 5 spot on the platform’s top 10 charts.
Directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, the film marks her directorial debut. She is the daughter of M. Night Shyamalan, known for directing the iconic horror film “The Sixth Sense” and other works renowned for their twist endings.
Plot
Dakota Fanning stars as Mina, a troubled artist who finds herself stranded in a vast forest in western Ireland. She is rescued by a group of survivors who live in a shelter deep within the trees. However, every night, unseen creatures encircle the shelter, watching their every move. The dilemma: staying inside is unbearable, but leaving would mean certain death.
The cast includes Georgina Campbell, Oliver Finnegan, and Olwen Fouere. Fanning’s performance in The Watchers follows her recent Emmy nomination for her role as Marge Sherwood in Netflix’s Ripley.
Is it worth watching?
The film has received mixed reviews, with a low 32% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a slightly higher audience score of 50%. Although it begins with promise, The Watchers quickly becomes a tedious experience, losing momentum and feeling like a chore to finish. It might be one to skip for many viewers.
