The U.S. state of Texas has been experiencing heavy rains and devastating floods for the past twenty-four hours, which have paralyzed daily life and left 24 people dead, as reported by international media.
According to officials, rainfall in just a few hours equal to several months’ worth has submerged numerous areas, turning streets, markets, and roads into rivers and streams.
Officials say that so far 24 people have died while dozens are missing. Rescue teams are continuously engaged in search and relief operations, including more than 100 National Guards and military personnel.
In the most affected city of San Angelo, up to 10 inches of rain was recorded, causing water to enter homes and bringing the traffic system to a complete standstill. Residents have become trapped in their homes, while power and communication systems have also been affected in several areas.
Emergency agencies have warned that there is a possibility of more rainfall, which could further worsen the flooding situation. A red alert has been issued in the affected areas, and the public has been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and move to safe locations.
An announcement of emergency aid for affected families is also expected from the state governor’s office. On the other hand, the U.S. National Weather Service has forecast more stormy rains in the next 48 hours and has urged citizens to remain alert.
